Well, I liked the movie but I wasn't blown away, the landscapes are amazing, the character design is great and I love how they managed to get the actors facial expressions through. The characters are well developed and the performances are good. But the story is predictable and preachy, and there is nothing really good about it outside the technical aspect. Also the movie felt too long to me, after two hours of adventure movie I was too tired to enjoy the last 45 minutes of action movie, even if the action was awesome (and it was) I couldn't get trough the cliche after cliche thing, I just wanted the movie to end to get some fresh air.
Also I saw the movie at a regular theater, so i probably missed half of the experience, but I don't have acces to a 3D theater. To me it was a movie that I really enjoyed, but that gave me no reason to watch it again.
And by the way Stephen Lang is awesome in this movie! he's one of the greatest over the top villains I have ever seen, seriously, I want a dvd version with the narration from this guy instead of sully's, that's what would make this movie perfect XD

As far as effects go, this IS the new Star Wars. As far as story and story telling go, Meh. I don't think it knew how to handle the last part of the final battle (when the last two people alive just happen to be the two main characters). I think the movie should have ended when that big tree fell, but maybe thats just my opinion...

Everyone is pretty much saying the same thing about the film. It comes down to if you can ignore the very real problems of the film and enjoy what it offers or not. Story wise absolutely this is nothing new. I think many people (including me) maybe wanted something like Star Wars story wise...something so different and unique and fresh. It's not , it's a very familiar story but that doesn't mean the movie isn't original. no other movie has has a planet feel that alive and thats what this movie does. the planet itself is a character and I thought thats what made Avatar such an amazing film. it took a long time to show sully fall in love with this planet because the movie was asking for us to fall in love with the planet too. IF the movie was shorter I think that would have been a major problem, sully suddenly jumping ship without understanding Pandora.  the movie made a ton of money you bet your ass there's going to be a sequel and Cameron always owns sequels. Expect far more sci fi goodness

Finally saw the movie today and it was...........satisfying! The special effect and 3D was, as I expected, ground makingly beautiful. The action was, as I expected, fun and exciting. The acting was, as I expected, great. And the story was, as I heard and read from many sources, passable. The length of the film didn't really bother me as it might to some. Not to mention, Pandora was awesome to look at. Overall, the movie was really intriguing but nothing spectacular outside of the special effects and 3D.

I had no real issues with the clichés but the predictability disappointed me.  Still, I had a lot of fun watching Lang ham it up as Quaritch.  The performances were solid but I was let down by Horner's sufficient score.  Still, Cameron knows how to direct and it's his direction that brings the movie together in a way that's greater than the sum of its parts.  Pandora steals the show with its fantastic visuals.  Avatar is a solid sci-fi with lots of potential for original stories.  Cameron has made some great sequels so I hope he can capitalise on Avatar's rich world building.

4/5 and my no. 5 movie of the year (in my top 10).

I thought Avatar was just terrific and was totally worth the Imax 3-D experience. It was just incredible how the movie took us to the world of Pandora. I been taken to such a magnificent place since my theatrical viewing of the LotR films. Smiley So thus, this movie has become one of my favorite flicks in recent years, and I will be seeing it again this Friday.

On another note, Fury, who were dead on with your review of Avatar! Kudos to you and your reviews! Wink

I can just say that this is certainly a movie for people who didn't experience Star Wars in 1977. I didn't and still haven't seen Star Wars. That's why I think that Avatar is flawless. The visuals are secondary here for me. It's the relationship between the characters. The relationship with Jake and Neytiri, Jake and Tsu'Tey, Neytiri and Tsu'Tey, Jake and Norm, Jake and Grace, Grace and Quaritch, Jake and Quaritch, Neytiri and Eytukan, and the best one, Jake and the whole planet of Pandora. No, even better, the audience and Pandora. This movie is so immersive that we are part of the film. If you don't follow the story, they wont include you. If you follow the story, you are in Pandora. You are training with Jake about the life on Pandora. You are flying with Neytiri. You are battling the marines. That's what gives Avatar a very special spot in my movie heart (and a pretty damn large one at that). It is a must-see for anyone who loves movies. This along with Star Trek and District 9 show that you can have a Sci-Fi blockbuster in this generation and still get a great story. Avatar was a perfect film on every level. I have seen it now three times in the theater which hasn't happened ever except for wall-E. This film is for sure my favorite film of all-time.

I honestly liked. I didn't have the "Dances with Wolves" problem mainly cause I never heard of it until Mom pointed it out to me.

Avatar, perfect in any possible way? As far as Sci-Fi goes, yeah great. But, I am the kind of film nerd who can talk for hours on the shot composition of Citizen Kane, and the cinematography of Raging Bull, and so on. I think I had my bar set to high for Avatar. However, I was very disappointed. If I look at it from a casual movie-goer's perspective, I would say it had 30 minutes to much footage. If I look at it like a film nerd, I would say the it's scene progression and passing was meh, its story was -meh, its acting was meh, and its writing was extra double meh. The story and writing don't have to hurt a movie, but this one did not make up for it in any way other then special effects, which will never be able to fix a movie (EVAR!!).

I think Avatar is one of the best science fiction/adventure films that has released in the past few decades. It's not a great movie. The story is stock and some of the casting decisions are quite questionable but as far as offering one a way to escape the daily mundane it succeeded. Sure, the movie is nothing but eye candy but that was not only the driving force behind the production but also the purpose of the film. When considering this, one should become a bit more lenient towards the story. After all, the movie is nothing but a bad B movie with state of the art special effects. So ,yeah, i was pleased with it. Even through lack of story and social commentary, Avatar was an event film that i will remember for a very long time.  However, even with the cutting edge graphics this remains, for me,  as one of the least atmospheric movies that, Cameron has made.
