They got knocked down under the bad reputation of a couple of shit spoof films. Really, there's been, what, three, four of these films from these shitty directors? The "_____ Movie" name thing caught on so now a lot of the good spoofs are being lumped in with the shit ones. Let me mention some of the good new ones!
Not Another Teen Movie is a masterpiece of spoofing! The first clue is in the way it doesn't only spoof stuff which came out that month; This one goes as far back as
The Breakfast Club even. On top of that it even has it's own genius musical number which deserves a friggin' comedy award. I'm not sure who created this one but it's one of my all-time favourite spoof films and doesn't deserve to be grouped with the shitty ones.
^ And look who they managed to get!!

The same goes for
Superhero Movie! I certainly wish they had given this movie a different name, because a lot of people assume it's part of the Date Movie/Epic Movie/Disaster Movie series, which, in turn, a lot of people think is what spawned from Scary Movie (which, in fact, was a Wayans Brothers film, and most of the other "_____ Movie" spoofs were cashing in on the name). In fact, Superhero Movie is by the folks who did Airplane, The Naked Gun and all those classics (as well as Scary Movie 3 and 4), and, despite their obvious decline in their two Scary Movie flicks (I thought 3 was hilarious but no Naked Gun, 4 just didn't do it for me), this is classic David Zucker stuff right here. Leslie Nielsen is still brilliant even at the age he is now, and some of the supporting cast in this film even give the king of spoof comedy a run for his money. If you liked Airplane and The Naked Gun, I highly recommend this, in fact I'd say it's the next best thing.
Okay, apart from those two, there's really not that many special spoof movies as they're being mass produced to keep up with the times (and those two who did Date Movie seem to get less funny and more obscene the more work they get). I didn't hate Date Movie as much as everybody else (though this one song sequence at the end seems so pointless and unfunny that it's almost surreal), Epic Movie would have entertained me if it had some kind of structure to it, and even Meet The Spartans amused me in parts, but these are still something I'd wipe off of the bottom of my shoe after a day in a field in the rain in comparison to the two flicks I mentioned up there, or, of course, the classic Zucker and Wayans films. Then I saw Disaster Movie and realised just how horrendous these things can get. Even from somebody who was able to stomach Meet The Spartans (I swear it was a better flick than Epic Movie), Disaster Movie was a nightmare.
